Minor Surgery Training for “Tuli” Mission

The Council for Health and Development (CHD) together with the Health Students' Action (HSA) conducted a Basic Health Orientation (BHO) and Minor Surgery Training on March 23, 2011. There was a total of 42 nursing students from various schools and universities in Metro Manila who participated.

The program was hosted by Ms. Ruth Bautista, program coordinator of HSA . The BHO started at 10:00am until 12:00nn. The current national health situation was reported Ritz Katrina P. Abenojar, R.N. of the Health Education Training and Services (HETS) department of CHD. The discussion focused on the ailing health system and the lack of government intervention to facilitate the improvement of people's health.

Issues that nurses currently face in the country was also justified in a short discussion by registered physical therapist, Maria Feliza M. Nolasco also from HETS-CHD. Some of the issues that were disclosed was about nurse volunteerism with a fee and the Magna Carta for health workers which is currently not implemented by the government. There was also a short film viewing about the health condition in Mindanao and the struggle to obtain quality health care for the people.

The participants were also encouraged to serve in poor communities and be involved in the people's struggle for health.

The Minor Surgery Training commenced at exactly 1:30 in the afternoon. It started with a lecture about minor surgery by Dr. Victoriano P. Sambale II. Afterwards, the students had a hands-on training in circumcision. Using chicken legs, Dr. Sambale carefully discussed and explained to the participants the proper way of circumcizing and suturing. The Minor Surgery Training ended at 4:30pm.

The participants were 2nd year, 3rd year and 4th year nursing students from Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), Arellano University (AU), and Perpetual Help College.
